The Mating Of The Yorkies....

It was around the beginning of June that I had my suspicions that it wouldn't be long before Rascal would be in season. She usually comes into heat every six to seven months and always gets feisty with it, so we have to watch her around the other female dogs when they start to give her attention that she doesn't want.
Alphie was a bit clueless as to what it was all about!
About a week later my suspicions were confirmed, as she started to bleed and as the vet had given the two Yorkies the all clear to mate, they could get down to business when the time was right - assuming Alphie was ready to step up and be a male dog.

It wasn't too long before Alphie started to notice that something was different about Rascal, although he couldn't quite put his paw on it. He took his level of playing up a notch and he couldn't leave her alone, - a sort of Yorkie flirting - we weren't even sure that he knew what it was all about as he just seemed to want to play chase and nip her back legs, which we put down to him still being young, although he was over a year old then.
Rascal did seem to love the attention, but we thought she was going to end up unsatisfied again as Alphie seemed to have no idea how to mate. When she first started to present herself to him, he would try his best and give it all he had, but he got it terribly wrong to start with, it was almost too sad to watch - maybe we should have got him a book!

It certainly didn't take him long to master the art of mating though! On the morning of June 20th, there was a terrific raucous coming from one of the bedrooms and we ran to the source of the noise, expecting to find one of the small dogs hurt, but no, we were greeted by the comical scene of two dogs that had been mating and had got stuck.

The two Yorkies had finally managed to do the deed, the noise was just them mating! There they were in the middle of the room, standing side by side but tied together by their genitals, - which for anyone who doesn't know is perfectly natural for dogs! Rascal was in a bit of a panic, but Alphie was calm and looked utterly pathetic - I suppose any male would be, when their jewels are trapped in a female!

My daughter and myself thought that for the sake of Alphies manhood we should sit and comfort the dogs until they came apart. The tie only lasted ten minutes or so and when the Yorkies came apart Rascal - who had been in a bit of a panic - started running around the house looking really pleased with herself. Alphie on the other hand, lovingly licked his male bits, probably just relieved to have them back in one piece before he sloped off for a well deserved doze to get over his ordeal.

After their first mating Rascal would not leave him alone, she was brazen in her pursuit of Alphie and when he could keep up with her, he would. Every evening for the next four days Alphie managed to do his bit and every evening they got tied and every evening we would sit and comfort them until they separated, we learned that the best way to calm Rascal was with small, soft treats, which she gobbled greedily seeming to forget the situation she had got herself into.

Knowing that the Yorkies had tied five times during their mating, we were hopeful that Rascal would be pregnant, but we also knew it was a waiting game and only time would tell us if Alphie had successfully impregnated Rascal.

Whether Rascal was pregnant or not made no difference to the fact that Alphie was to be castrated. As I saw it, if she wasn't pregnant then it wasn't meant to be and I didn't want to leave it until Alphie was much older to get him castrated as I didn't want the hassles that come with having an intact male or the bad habits they can develop.

I made an appointment to have Alphie castrated on July 2nd......
